DISCLAIMER
----------
The software on this CD is provided "as is"; Acorn Computers Limited
("Acorn") makes no warranty, express or implied, of the merchantability of
this software or its fitness for any particular purpose. In no circumstances
shall Acorn be liable for any damage, loss of profits, or any indirect or
consequential loss arising out of the use of this software or inability to
use this software, even if Acorn has been advised of the possibility of
such loss.
BASIC INSTALLATION
------------------
The software on this CD is supplied, in the main, as compressed archives
which were created using David Pilling's SparkFS.
If you do not have a copy of SparkFS, or the freeware !SparkPlug
decompressor, run the BASIC DEARCHIV program in this directory; this is a
self-decompressing version of !SparkPlug, which will proceed to build itself
in your CSD. You can then use this !SparkPlug to examine and decompress the
archives stored in the DISTRIB directory on this CD.
The software in the DISTRIB directory on this CD is sourced from the disc
build for the J233 Risc PC variant; in the case of both the Browser CD and
the Java CD, the vast majority of the software supplied with the J233 machine
is included.
To install the software in the DISTRIB directory, you must follow the
instructions below IN STRICT ORDER:
* copy !SparkPlug to the root directory of your hard disc (if this is the
CSD, then running DEARCHIV will do this for you)
* copy the STUB archive to the root directory of your hard disc, double
click on it to view its contents, and copy said contents (which decompresses
them in the process) to the root directory of your hard disc.
* create a non-application directory in the root directory of your hard disc
(called, say, OldDistrib) and recursively move (shift-drag) all the
contents of your hard disc's root directory, other than !SparkPlug and the
!Scrap and !System you extracted from the STUB archive, into it.
* Reboot your machine. You will see errors to the effect that !Boot has not
been found. This is to be expected; panic not.
* Double-click on the !System and !Scrap applications in your root directory.
Copy the contents of the DISTRIB directory on this CD to the root directory
of your hard disc (alternatively, if you are low on free hard disc space,
you can decompress the archives directly from the CD; however, this will
take significantly longer).
* Use !SparkPlug to view the contents of these archives, and copy them all to
the root directory of your hard disc.
* Reboot your machine.
You should now have a disc structure which closely resembles that of the J233
machine; !Boot should run successfully. You may now delete from your hard
disc !SparkPlug, the !System and !Scrap which were extracted from the
STUB archive, and the archives you copied from this CD.
Note that some third-party applications which have components normally
resident within the !Boot hierarchy may need to be reinstalled from their
original discs.
MERGING THE CONTENTS OF BOTH CDS
--------------------------------
If you have acquired both the Java and Browser CD distributions, you will
note that there is a significant degree of commonality between these
distributions. You should install the Browser disc first according to the
instructions above, and then copy the contents of the BOOT archive
from the Java CD over the top of the Browser !Boot hierarchy (ensuring first
that the "Newer" option in your filer options menu is set).
USING JAVA AND OTHER PLUGINS WITH A NON-ACORN BROWSER
-----------------------------------------------------
!Java and other designated browser plugins conform to a common plugin
interface, which is currently (as of 10/03/98) supported by both Acorn
!Browse and ANT !Fresco. Thus it is not necessary to install !Browse to use
!Java, if you have a sufficiently up-to-date copy of the ANT Internet Suite.
If !Java does not appear to work with your copy of !Fresco, contact ANT for
further guidance.
